Watch Multiple Videos at Once

Watch Multiple Videos at Once

This projects explores how parallel watching of multiple video files, at once in a single video mosaic, can generate a new video itself with a pleasant and unexpected experience, that the sequential watching cannot provides. This requires a thoughtful choice in the selection of video dataset, visual layout and synchronization. And because video files are large, the mosaic has to be generated in advance. Below are a series of examples I did myself.

Why? well, because:

"72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute"
(Source: YouTube Statistics, April 2013)

My vision is that we need a new generation of video players. Among the many other reasons than the one above, we require better montage techniques to absorbe and optimise idle times in videos, we need to multiplex them, such as to skip or emphasize repetitions in it. There are already similar experiments for both videos and music (e.g. All national anthem at once). But as far as I know, there is no out-of-the-shelves tool to create such videos, nor a clear design space of what can be done with best practices. I've seen a couple of tools around for playing multiple videos at once, but it lacks either of synchronisation feature, or reliability. My goal is to both explore the design and generate new tools.

For examples of such videos, have a look at my YouTube channel for a playlist I curate with my production and the one of others. Below is a sample of my work you can find on this channel:
